Elbit America’s mission is to create innovative solutions that protect and save lives. However, the company also prioritizes giving back within the communities their facilities reside. Recently, the company’s Night Vision business unit in Roanoke, Virginia donated a demonstration air scrubber system to the Roanoke Valley Governor’s School for Science and Technology (RVGS). Along with the donation, Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) employees provided a tutorial on the equipment to RVGS teachers in order to maximize use of the system among secondary students that display advanced STEM ability.
The demonstration air scrubber is a scaled down model similar to those used by Night Vision to remove chemical vapors from their air exhaust systems so that only clean air is released. It was designed by Night Vision EHS Engineers and constructed to function like a scaled version of an actual scrubber for education purposes. The Roanoke EHS department previously used it as an education outreach tool, but felt the equipment could be used more frequently, if placed within a local school. Since the science labs at RVGS contain state-of-the-art equipment and are geared to educate students in biotechnology, environmental science, chemistry research, nanotechnology, and engineering fabrication, the demonstration air scrubber donation would be a perfect fit for the school.
Senior Facility Engineer Shawn Stanley coordinated the donation and facilitated the training on the equipment. He said the donation will generate more hands-on instruction in the school’s strong STEM programs.
Stanley said, “We believe giving back to our community is not only living our core values but embracing them. We give back because we care about our community. [This donation] makes a difference and fulfills a true need.”
